Event Details
The practice of casting non-Jewish actors in roles specifically written as Jewish has reached epidemic proportions in recent years, prompting comedian Sara Silverman to call Hollywood out for creating a heated controversy that continues to boil today. The glaring example of two recent, critically acclaimed childhood memoirs by famous directors– Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans and James Gray’s Armageddon Time – brought the issue of Jewish characters being played by non-Jews into sharp relief.
From The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to The Patient or The Shrink Next Door, streaming services consistently turn to non-Jews to portray overtly Jewish characters. Kathryn Hahn, who played a rabbi in Transparent, was set to play Joan Rivers in a mini-series that was cancelled after much nasty pushback. Bradley Cooper, in a prosthetic nose, will soon be on screen as Leonard Bernstein. Helen Mirren will portray Golda Meir. Daisy Edgar-Jones has just been cast to play Carol King. The list is long, prompting questions that merit debate.
Join Kathryn Bernheimer, Founding Director of the Boulder Jewish Film Festival, for a discussion on this phenomenon. We invite film lovers to share their thoughts about a whole host of Jewish movies and streaming series, whether you are looking for recommendations of programs to watch or want to discuss what you’ve currently been watching. This program will cast light on a wide expanse of Jewish content.
Join us 12:30 – 1 pm for a pre-program social.

Join friends and family in an inclusive Passover Seder for all ages and stages. With meaningful discourse, dynamic discussion, pop-quizzes, interactive fun and a children’s program, this is a Passover experience to be enjoyed by all.
While the Passover Seder celebrates the ancient story of the Jewish nation’s beginnings, it also recalls a deeper story of personal exodus relevant to each of us in our daily lives. Join an experiential and immersive experience that carries depth, relevance and wisdom as well as good, light-hearted celebration.
We will have a children’s program with fun games including leap frog competitions, a ‘find the wild animals’ hunt, ‘build your own lego pyramid’, prizes for ‘Afikomen’ (the Matzah that is traditionally hidden) finders and more.
Look forward to the traditional 4 cups of wine, plenty of authentic Hand-made round Matzah, a delicious brisket dinner (with vegetarian options) and plenty of food for thought.

Don’t Pass(this-one)over. Let’s celebrate Passover as a YJP community and share an-all-you-can-crunch Seder with good friends, escape room style interactive Passover table games and a plentiful 4 cups of wine. Exclusively for 20’s-40’s in a private space in North West City Park.
The Passover Seder has had a bad rap – as being long, boring and dry as the desert. But not at YJP.
A Seder with YJP blows all those misconceptions right out of the red sea, by sharing an animated, fun, joke-filled Seder that will have you on your A-game. Compete with neighboring tables for a chance to ‘escape’ Egypt and break the code as you mine your Hagaddah for hints to some puzzling team riddles. Be uplifted by the interactive opportunities to share insights and deep stories and Kabbalistic ideas as we bring the Passover story to life with relevance and meaning.
This is the 2nd night Seder where we walk our way out of Egypt together.

We will plan to be outside just east of the barn or in the Greenhouse unless the weather makes those spaces inaccessible. In the event that we can’t be on the farm, we will email you Thursday evening and let you know to meet in the JCC library.

Join Michelle Wolf and Susan Berman as we create an instant mini-choir! Rooted in Jewish wisdom, the music will include a range of melodies intended to delight and open hearts, as well as integrate songs from other folk/wisdom traditions, weaving in prayer, poetry, and story. All levels of musicality are welcome and no specific knowledge of Hebrew or Judaism is needed.
Michelle Wolf, Ba’lat Tefilah (Master of Prayer), is a lifelong vocalist with experience in a range of genres: classical, jazz, a cappella, and liturgy. She feels most on-purpose when leading sacred prayer and chant, using her voice and presenceto open hearts and lead others to connection with Source. Michelle served Jewish Renewal Congregation Nevei Kodesh as cantor for 11 years alongside Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, and more recently as lead prayer service leader. For her mastery as Jewish liturgist, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (z’’l) formally conferred upon her the title Ba’alat Tefilah.
Susan Berman is a singer, flutist, and choral leader, as well as a service leader actively involved in the Boulder community. Most recently, she collaborated with Michelle Wolf to lead Song Circle, an eclectic mix of Jewish, traditional, and contemporary chant and song. Susan has enjoyed many years of work as a music teacher, studio musician, private flute and vocal teacher, and gig musician with numerous music groups. Her exposure to indigenous culture, instruments, and vocal traditions while living in Taos, NM, for 30 years informed her Singer/Songwriter period, with three original CD releases. The albums are a fusion of world music, Jewish heritage, and American folk roots.
Michelle and Susan have been co-creating musical and ritual experiences for 10 years, and leading sacred song circles since 2020.

In honor of Yom Hashoah, we will show the film My Italian Secret.
Would you risk your life to save a stranger and never talk about it? MY ITALIAN SECRET tells the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other courageous Italians who carried out ingenious schemes to rescue Jews, partisans and refugees from Nazi-occupied Italy. Gino Bartali is a sports legend; but his most daring triumph came when he risked his life over and over to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination. The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people), more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived. Bartali, like most of the rescuers, never sought recognition or reward. Few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue. 90 minute film plus schmooze following.

Are you seeking to live with greater consciousness and mindfulness, both in your actions and thoughts? Mussar, a Jewish spiritual practice, explores personal character traits called Middot. Examples of these soul traits include humility, patience, honor, trust, and generosity, to name a few! Through working on the development and awareness of these traits, each of us learns how to respond to the world in ways that help bring about greater peace, compassion, understanding, and joy.
This 3-session class will provide a sample of the ancient Jewish, contemplative practice of Mussar through a variety of teaching modalities and expressive arts. No artistic experience is necessary, as we will use simple art techniques and supplies to explore our relationship through this spiritual pathway. Materials provided.
Rabbi Eva is an experienced Mussar teacher, studying and practicing for over two decades. Her passions include integrating Jewish and Mystical practices (text study, chanting, embodied modalities, meditation) with the expressive arts. R’ Eva is currently a fellow in the Jewish Studio Project Creative Facilitator Training and in their first Clergy Cohort.

This year’s program will feature a conversation with Holocaust Survivor Paul Galan. Paul is a native of former Czechoslovakia. Through a series of unusual circumstances and an extraordinary amount of luck, he and his immediate family members – although separated from one another – all survived the war. Paul immigrated to the United States as a teenager and spent his career in film production. On his retirement in 2006, he decided to put his skills as a communicator towards disseminating the memory and the legacy of the Holocaust by sharing his own story of survival during that dark period in history with student as well as adult audiences. He also produced several video projects dealing with the Holocaust. Paul is a member of the Board of Trustees and currently co-president of the Holocaust Museum and Study Center located at Rockland Community College in Suffern, NY.
The program will also include remarks from Governor Jared Polis, a presentation to the winners of ADL’s A Tribute to Moral Courage Student Essay Contest, the chanting of the El Maleh Memorial Prayer and more.

Most students learn about the concentration and death camps of the Holocaust — Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, etc. Few are aware that more than ⅓ of the 6 million Jewish people and thousands of non-Jewish victims targeted during the Holocaust were murdered in fields, forests, and ravines in the former Soviet Union and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Many of these sites remain unknown, unmarked, and unrecorded to this day.
Save the date for a 2-day workshop to learn more about this unknown chapter of Holocaust history and its contemporary implications.
This two-day, 16-Hour Seminar will take place on Friday, April 21 & Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the University of Northern Colorado’s Lowry Campus in Denver, CO.
Registration will begin the week of March 27, 2023….more details to come.
During the workshop, which will be facilitated by Yahad – In Unum educators, you will:
Learn about the fate of the Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union and about the mass shootings in which they perished, known today as the Holocaust by Bullets.
Discover Yahad – In Unum’s investigative work in the archives and in the field: the organization has interviewed over 7,400 eyewitnesses to those crimes, and it has identified over 3,200 killing sites in Eastern Europe.
Investigate excerpts from eyewitness testimony and how this can be used to enhance students’ critical thinking skills.
Get an overview of educational tools which will help you address this part of Holocaust history with your students.
Learn about contemporary mass crimes investigated by Yahad – In Unum: mass killings of the Mayan populations in Guatemala, Yazidi genocide in Iraq, and current war crimes in Ukraine.
Discuss means of connecting the past with the present and of making the study of the Holocaust relevant to students’ lives.

Event Details
Yom Ha Zikaron is the memorial day for the fallen soldiers of the Wars of Israel and victims of actions of terrorism. Enacted into law in Israel in1963, it is Israel’s official remembrance day. While Yom Ha Zikaron has been traditionally dedicated to fallen soldiers, commemoration has extended to civilian victims of terrorism throughout the years.
The Israel American Council (IAC) has created a moving and meaningful event using songs and personal stories to show gratitude, respect, and to celebrate the lives of those lost. Traditions of ceremonies and public sing-alongs are a common practice in Israel on Yom Ha Zikaron, stretching back to the early 20th century with the first waves of Jewish immigrants, and will take place at this celebration.
This program is open to the whole community. Advance registration is strongly recommended.

Yom HaZikaron immediately precedes Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Haatzmaut. During Yom HaZikaron, Israelis honor and pay tribute to fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. A signature part of this day is a two-minute standstill of all activities in Israel as sirens blare and people pause their daily life to pay their respects, followed by a second siren later in the day before people begin prayer ceremonies. Originally enacted into law in 1963, Yom HaZikaron is now an integral part of Israeli culture and is observed around the world.
Join us on Monday, April 24, at Hebrew Educational Alliance as we honor those who have laid down their lives for the Jewish State and remember those we have lost to acts of terrorism. This year we will hear from Elisa Mindlin, who lost her brother, Michael Levin, in the 2006 2nd Lebanon War. More info on Elisa and Michael’s story here.
If you have a friend or family member who is a fallen Israeli soldier or victim of terror, and would like to have them recognized in our memorial, please email Itai Divinsky at idivinsky@jewishcolorado.org
Yom HaZikaron is co-sponsored and hosted by Hebrew Educational Alliance (HEA).

In his talk, Adam Rovner details the cultural context and legacy of proposals to create mass settlements of Jewish refugees in Australia during the Nazi era. Archives located on four continents reveal how poets, playwrights, journalists, and social revolutionaries all worked to imagine the creation of a Jewish city-state “down under.” This little known chapter of history stems from a long tradition of Jewish Territorialism, a political ideology that merged the literary imagination with nationalist projects. For much of the 20th century, the question was not whether there should be a Jewish political entity, but where to put it. The abortive efforts to settle Jews in the Kimberley region and in southwestern Tasmania dramatize the story of centuries of Jewish homelessness. Cost $5, light refreshments included.

Everybody has a story: whether that be a life journey, interesting happening, or heroic tale. Whatever your story may be, bring it to our Playback Theater performance and see your story transformed into introspective, thought-provoking art on stage and in the moment. Come to listen, engage, and connect!
Since 2019, the talented performers of the Colorado University Playback Ensemble have helped audiences across Colorado share their stories and boost a sense of commonality and shared belonging. At a Playback performance, audience members voluntarily share stories from their lives, which trained actors and musicians re-enact on the spot through improvised forms of music, sound, and movement. The result is an evening of art, insight, connection, and community.
Playback Theatre has been practiced around the world for nearly 50 years, frequently in conflict zones, due to its proven capacity to bring audiences together. Through the communal sharing of stories – enlivened by the empathy-building power of live theatre – the truth and complexity of our individual lives are unearthed, shared, and honored. Real life is transformed into art – with the capacity to transform real life.
