This week’s parsha, Nitzavim/Vayeilech, comes at a moment of transition. Moses is nearing the end of his leadership, and as he gathers the people, he reminds them that the covenant they share is not only for those standing before him, but also for those “not with us here this day.”
It is a striking idea: that our responsibilities extend beyond the present moment, and even beyond the people we know. What we choose to build, sustain and pass forward can shape the lives of people we may never meet.
That message feels especially meaningful as we approach a new year. So much of Jewish life is rooted in continuity: receiving something from those who came before us, caring for it in our own time, and strengthening it for those who will come after us.
That is also at the heart of the work of The Foundation at JEWISHcolorado. Through thoughtful philanthropy, donor-advised funds, endowments and legacy giving, individuals and families have the opportunity to turn the values they hold today into lasting support for the Jewish community of tomorrow.
Nitzavim/Vayeilech asks us to think not only about where we stand, but also about what we leave behind. As we enter this season of reflection and renewal, may we consider the values, traditions and community we hope to carry forward, and the role each of us can play in ensuring they endure.
