“Lake Nighthorse,” a reservoir in Southwest Colorado is named after Senator Nighthorse-Campbell, of Northern Cheyenne ancestry. Learn about the history around the creation of the reservoir. It is a complicated microcosm for Native American history in the 21st century. Using the creation of the reservoir and the Ute Indian Water Settlement Act, we will explore the larger history of Native peoples in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, including water, law and sacred sites. The main focus will be in Colorado and the American West, and a bit east of the Mississippi River to gain a thorough historical context. Join us to gain a better understanding of Native American history, and, hopefully, an appreciation for the tenacity of communities who persist in the lands of their ancestors.
