Hava Nagila (The Movie) is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of the great Jewish standard. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Regina Spektor and more, the film follows the ubiquitous party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the kibbutzim of Palestine to the cul-de-sacs of America. High on fun and entertainment, Hava Nagila (The Movie) is also surprisingly profound, tapping into universal themes about the importance of joy, the power of music and the resilient spirit of a people.
75-minute film plus schmooze following. No cost.

Get to know the Mile High Jewish radicals and the many dreamers within the Jewish community who have allied themselves with labor. They were members of the Socialist party and Communist Party. In the 1960s, Jews were part and parcel of the New Left. Did you know the founder of the alternative news service, Liberation News, was a Denver boy? Who knew, a Jewish radical from New York hid out in Denver in the early 1970s and was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List for bombing toilets in federal buildings. Get to know more Denver Jewish history with Phil Goodstein. $5.00

Actress and scholar Judy Winnick will portray Irena Sendler.
As a Polish Catholic social worker during WWII, Irena Sendler risked her life to save others. She was the leader of the children’s section of Zegota, Council for Aid to Jews, and part of the Polish underground. With ingenuity, calmness and courage, she was responsible for rescuing 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. Irena never thought of herself as a hero, and said she simply did what needed to be done, and followed her heart.
Irena was born in 1910 and died in Warsaw in 2008, at the age of 98. During her lifetime she received many awards for her humanitarian work. In addition to being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, Irena was recognized by the state of Israel as one of the “Righteous Among Nations” at Yad Vashem.

Event Details
In honor of Yom Hashoah, we will show the film My Italian Secret.
Would you risk your life to save a stranger and never talk about it? MY ITALIAN SECRET tells the story of sports idol Gino Bartali and other courageous Italians who carried out ingenious schemes to rescue Jews, partisans and refugees from Nazi-occupied Italy. Gino Bartali is a sports legend; but his most daring triumph came when he risked his life over and over to save Jews threatened by Nazi extermination. The story of Bartali and the secret network he worked with stands in for the stories of thousands of Italians who risked their lives to save others from capture and death. As an entire continent was engulfed in a genocide which took the lives of most Jews in Nazi occupied Europe (nearly 6 million people), more than 80 percent of Italy’s Jews survived. Bartali, like most of the rescuers, never sought recognition or reward. Few of those he helped knew his name or what role he played in their rescue. 90 minute film plus schmooze following.

Event Details
In his talk, Adam Rovner details the cultural context and legacy of proposals to create mass settlements of Jewish refugees in Australia during the Nazi era. Archives located on four continents reveal how poets, playwrights, journalists, and social revolutionaries all worked to imagine the creation of a Jewish city-state “down under.” This little known chapter of history stems from a long tradition of Jewish Territorialism, a political ideology that merged the literary imagination with nationalist projects. For much of the 20th century, the question was not whether there should be a Jewish political entity, but where to put it. The abortive efforts to settle Jews in the Kimberley region and in southwestern Tasmania dramatize the story of centuries of Jewish homelessness. Cost $5, light refreshments included.
