Shabbat Shalom: Legacy, Leadership, and Living Our Values

In Va’etchanan, we find Moses in a deeply human moment. After leading the Israelites through decades of wandering, he pleads with G-d to enter the Promised Land—but is told no. His journey will end just shy of the destination, and his role becomes preparing others to carry the vision forward.

Moses’ experience reminds us that leadership isn’t always about crossing the finish line. Often, it’s about laying the foundation so others can take the next steps. That kind of foresight, humility, and care is something I see echoed in our community every day—especially through my work with The Foundation at JEWISHcolorado.

Much of what we do is about building for a future we may not fully witness. Whether helping families establish endowments, supporting legacy gifts, or guiding long-term philanthropic planning, our work is grounded in the belief that impact extends across generations. In this way, we honor a core Jewish value: l’dor v’dor—from generation to generation.

This parsha also includes the Shema—one of the most central declarations in Jewish life—calling us to listen, to love, and to teach. It challenges us to live our values intentionally and to pass them on with care. Whether through formal education, community involvement, or quiet conversations at home, this work of transmission is ongoing—and essential.

At The Foundation, we are privileged to support this sacred responsibility. Every grant recommended, every legacy conversation held, and every fund established becomes part of a larger story—one that reflects the enduring themes of Va’etchanan: responsibility, remembrance, and values-driven leadership.
