Born in 1021 in Málaga, Spain, Shelomo Ibn Gabirol was orphaned young yet grew into one of the most gifted poets and philosophers of medieval Judaism. Brilliant, tormented, and uncompromising, he struggled with chronic illness and a fierce temperament. In this class, we will explore his life and works and seek to understand the complex figure whose poetry continues to resonate in our synagogues to this day.
