In early September 1864, Abram Simon, an 18-year-old Jewish German immigrant hopped on a coal train in New Jersey and traveled to Poughkeepsie, New York to enlist in the Union Army. This presentation will consider the context of Simon’s enlistment and the courage it took to leave home and family to fight in a war that by 1864 was producing thousands of casualties a month. His patriotism and service proved to be defining characteristics for Simon for the rest of his life.
