Event Details
During this 4-week session, we will explore the opportunities and challenges that we face as we reflect on the past year and transition into the High Holidays. Where have we come from and what intentions do we bring into the new year? Topics will include asking and offering forgiveness (tshuva), reflecting on what this time in life means, letting go and embracing new reality, setting intentions for living more mindfully, joyfully and compassionately as part of the aging journey. Together we will explore using mindfulness practices, journaling, meditation, art expression, study, and sharing as tools for connecting to ourselves and others.
Rabbi Eva Sax-Bolder served as the Rabbi of The Shul of New York until moving to Boulder in the summer of 2021. She currently serves as the Rosh Hashpa’ah, head of spiritual direction for the ALEPH Ordination Program, and maintains a private practice as a spiritual companion. Rabbi Eva has facilitated Wise Aging groups in synagogue and community settings for many years, integrating aspects of her training in meditation, mindfulness, mussar and the expressive arts.
Open to all those who identify as female age 60 . It is strongly recommended to buy the required reading Wise Aging before the start of this session.

Join us in-person or virtually for the ReelAbilities Film Festival screening of Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution, a kick-off to ReelAbilities Film Festival. This feel-good documentary recounts the ties of a Catskills summer camp to American disability rights activism in the 1970s.
A groundbreaking summer camp for teens with disabilities proves so inspiring that a group of its alumni join the radical disability rights movement to advocate for historic legislation changes. Crip Camp is the story of one group of people and captures one moment in time.
In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination, and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking, and make-out sessions awaiting everyone, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions.
Director James Lebrecht will present a virtual talkback immediately proceeding the screening.
Please join us for a pre-program ReelAbilites Film Festival launch party and social with light fare and refreshments!

Event Details
The Boulder JCC is partnering with the Boulder Office of Disaster Management for our Disaster Strong Preparedness Workshop, Train-the-Trainer.
This workshop is intended for participants who want to support preparedness efforts in the Boulder County community by becoming Community Preparedness Ambassadors who work to teach community peers the essentials of disaster preparedness. There’s no need to have any prior knowledge of disaster preparedness – this series will equip participants with all the info they’ll need to successfully facilitate the preparedness content to peers by covering emergency notification information, how to conduct a personal risk assessment, creating a plan, and facilitation skills.
Participants should bring a method for notetaking (notebook and writing utensil, laptop, etc.) and will leave with a copy of our Disaster Strong Facilitator Guide with access to our Community Preparedness Ambassadors webpage that contains all preparedness content with ways to connect with your fellow trainers.
Upon completion of this training our hope is that participants will work with their congregations, neighborhood associations, PTO, bowling league, book club or any other group you are associated with to help everyone be prepared.

Event Details
The ancient Greeks first discovered the principles of the camera obscura sometime between the 5th and 4th centuries BC, but photography as we know it was invented in the 19th century. The first “photograph” was taken by Joseph Niepce in 1814, it wasn’t until 1839 when Louis Daguerre and William Henry Fox Talbot simultaneously released completely different processes for capturing and holding an image that we entered the age of photography.
Modern photography is a language that everybody speaks today. We walk around with tangible cameras in our pockets and have online platforms where pictures are a prominent aspect. Photography We instinctively understand and relate to photographic images, while contemporary paintings often require some kind of explanation and context.
How did we get to this point in photography in less than 200 years?
In this lecture with Peter Hay Halpert, look at the history of photography through ten pictures (and a few asides and detours), running from 1839 through to cutting edge contemporary work. Through this tour, examine some of the key issues that photography has dealt with and get to know some of the most important artists who have worked with the medium. Join in for a post-program social with light fare from 1:30 – 2 pm.
In an effort to reduce single-use items, we encourage you to bring your own water bottles, utensils, and other serving pieces to all programs at the Boulder JCC. We are grateful for the partnership of our community in our commitment to sustainability

The majority of European Jewish children alive in 1939 were murdered during the Holocaust. Of the 1.5 million children, only an estimated 150,000 survived. In the aftermath of the Shoah, efforts by American Jews brought several thousand of these child survivors to the United States. Open to all, join us for a social from 10:30 – 11 am and take part in discussion with historian, Beth B. Cohenat the Boulder JCC.
In her talk, historian Beth B. Cohen will weave together survivor testimonies and archival documents to bring their story to light. She reveals that even as child survivors were resettled and “saved,” they struggled to adapt to new lives as members of adoptive families, previously unknown American Jewish kin networks, or their own survivor relatives. Nonetheless, the youngsters moved ahead. As Cohen demonstrates, the experiences both during and after the war shadowed their lives and relationships through adulthood, yet an identity as “survivors” eluded them for decades. Now, as the last living link to the Holocaust, the voices of Child Survivors are finally being heard.
Beth B. Cohen received her Ph.D. in Holocaust History from Clark University, and her Master’s degree from Harvard University. Cohen is the author of two books and many publications on Holocaust survivors’ postwar experiences in the United States. She also consults widely to Holocaust museums and educational organizations. Currently, she is developing a permanent exhibit on the Holocaust for the United Nations Headquarters in NYC. Cohen lives and works in Berkeley, California.
This program is supported by the Ilona Irene Rosenschein Holocaust Education Endowment Fund (IIRHEF) at the Boulder JCC. This fund was launched in 2019 with a generous donation from Larry Cohn to honor Irene and her contribution to Holocaust education in the Boulder Community. Join us in contemplating the beauty and vibrance of plants through still life collage. Thinking about the consciousness of plant life, we will approach a still life that is focused on flowers and fauna. We will cover painterly concepts of space, line, form and color as light as we observe and interpret the still life. Pushing observational painting and our conscious thoughts about plant life into new dimensions. We will use collage to play with balancing different realms and experiences into one work. Students will use a common departure point but are welcome to bring sketches and ideas to incorporate into their collage.
All levels and beginners are welcome!

TRUE COLORS is a salon theatre show in which Jews of Color share true stories about their yearning for belonging and the rich and complicated question that is identity. While all people face challenges and struggles, Jews of Color have many touching and unique stories to tell about resilience, self-respect, and celebrating the many colors and voices in our community.
The stories in TRUE COLORS, ostensibly about Jews who feel “different,” actually remind us how very much alike we are. In TRUE COLORS, audiences will meet unforgettable characters who tell personal stories about how they see themselves and how others see them. Ironically, while many American Jews can reach consensus about a commitment to social justice for others, they do not always embrace diversity in their own community. The enlightening show will explore the impact of living as Jews of Color when inclusion and equity are not always practiced in the Jewish community.
“We are proud to spotlight the experiences of Jews of Color.” said Ronda Spinak, The Braid’s Artistic Director. “These are poignant and moving stories of questioning, of feeling like the outsider, of committing to Judaism…quintessential and universal Jewish stories!”
TRUE COLORS was created and produced by The Braid (formerly Jewish Women’s Theatre) as part of its Salon Theatre season in May 2019 with material curated and adapted by Ronda Spinak, directed by Susan Morgenstern and co-produced by Eric Greene. Learn more about The Braid.
