Nonprofit Security Grants Announced; Colorado Organizations Garner $2.2 Million

Sep 7, 2022

(DENVER) — New data for the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) was just released showing that only 52% of the 2022 applications were approved, an increase of six percent from last year. In Colorado, 24 organizations received NSGP grants, 18 of them Jewish for a total of $2.2 million to Jewish organizations statewide. This year’s local increase is due in part to assistance provided by JEWISHcolorado’s Safety & Security Initiative and the work of Regional Security Advisor Phil Niedringhaus and Secure Community Networks.

Colorado’s program is conducted in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League and is supported by the Rose Community Foundation, the Jay & Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Colorado, and individual donors.  Jewish Federations, other Jewish agencies, and Congressional leaders continue to urge that funding increase from the $250 million allocated this year to $360 million in the next funding cycle.

The ongoing shortfall in federal funding for security has highlighted the need for private donations to make up the gap. As the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reported this week, the LiveSecure program is leveraging a total of $130 million–$62 from the national campaign and $68 million that is being raised by Federations across the continent—to upgrade the safety of Jewish communities, including JEWISHcolorado.

Colorado organizations receiving federal grants include:

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish in Denver
Chabad Center at University of Colorado, Inc.
Colorado Muslim Society
Congregation Beth Evergreen
Congregation Bonai Shalom
Congregation Emanuel, dba Temple Emanuel
Congregation Hebrew Educational Alliance
Denver Jewish Day School
Jewish Community Centers of Denver
Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church
Temple Sinai
The Beth Jacob High School of Denver, Residence Campus
The Jewish Life Center
B’nai Jacob Cemetery Association – United Hebrew Center
Chabad of Colorado Springs Jewish Community
Congregation Har Shalom
Jewish Community Center of Grand Junction
New Life Church
Partners in Housing, Inc.
Temple Beit Torah
The Jewish Resource Center – Chabad of Aspen
United Hebrew Center, Inc.
United States Space Foundation

Those organizations that applied for but did not receive federal grants may now be eligible for state NPSG dollars from the state of Colorado under legislation passed last year establishing a statewide grant program. The legislation was shepherded by JEWISHcolorado’s Jewish Community Relations Council and a community coalition of more than 100 organizations.
