Jews in Leadville played a central role in the founding and development of what was once Colorado’s most important mining community, and many who resided in Leadville managed to connect with their Jewish roots. In 1881, over 103 known Jewish businesses—including clothing and dry good stores, groceries, and liquor enterprises—were operating in Leadville, which at its height featured both a Reform and Orthodox synagogue.
