In the award-winning audio documentary The Nightingale of Iran, sisters Galeet and Danielle Dardashti tell the compelling story of their family’s musical journey from Persia to Israel and to the United States. Their grandfather Younes Dardashti, a religious Jew from Tehran, became one of the most celebrated singers of pre-revolutionary Iran, singing on the radio and at the Shah’s palace. A decade later, their father Farid became a teen idol on Iranian television. Both were beloved by Iranian Muslims, but only tenuously accepted by fellow Jews. At the height of their fame, they left the country.
Emmy award-winning storyteller and producer Danielle Dardashti and renowned musician and anthropologist of Middle Eastern Jewish culture Galeet Dardashti will discuss their family history and the making of the podcast, and perform songs inspired by their grandfather.
