Event Details

Join Dr. Mark Ellyne, as he discusses the political-economic history of South Africa and explains why this “rich” country also has such a large, impoverished population. South Africa is typical of other emerging markets where there seem to be two economies operating side by side: a modern competitive economy that looks like California in many places, and a developing world economy that looks like many other African countries. South Africa also has the 12th largest Jewish population globally and Mark will explain the complex relationships that have existed between the Jewish community and past governments.

Bio: Dr. Mark Ellyne and his wife Joyce spend half of the year in Denver and the other half in Cape Town, South Africa, where Mark is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University Cape Town. Mark is a specialist in economic policy and previously worked at the International Monetary Fund for 25 years, where he was involved in lending programs to many insolvent African countries.

Please join us for a pre-program social with light fare and refreshments from 11:30 am – 12:00 pm
