Film Screenings: Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on NYC Streets (2024)

“Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on NYC Streets ” (2024) is a powerful film about the response to the events of October 7. After Hamas kidnapped 251 people from Israel on October 7, and as Israel’s war in Gaza unfolded, a conflict thousands of miles away erupted on New York’s walls.

The film captures the emotional fallout of the now-iconic “KIDNAPPED” poster campaign – a grassroots act of solidarity that quickly became a flashpoint, igniting fierce confrontations between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian New Yorkers. Through the voices of 10 New Yorkers – artists, activists, and hostage families- the film unpacks the motivations behind those putting up and tearing down the posters, exposing a complex proxy war fought in stickers, slogans, and torn paper.

We will be joined by Nim Shapira, the Director, producer, and writer of the film. Following the screening, Nim will be in conversation with Founding Film Festival Director, Kathryn Bernheimer. Nim is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning Israeli-American filmmaker, creative director, and multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He is widely recognized for his work at the intersection of traditional documentary film and immersive technologies.
