MEZUZAH MAKING – A JEWISH STUDIO PROJECT
The Jewish Studio Project is part of a broader movement exploring the fertile integration of Jewish learning and the ‘arts.’ Jewish study has always been a creative enterprise, but one dominated by words and the intellect at the expense of our other senses and creative faculties. This class will engage participants in the process of creating a ritual item used to dedicate a home or sacred space, a mezuzah. We will explore the traditional texts and symbols of a mezuzah through a variety of artistic media, from sound and music, to color and form. Together we will draw and paint, cut and paste, tap and hum, sculpt and build.
Classes are offered in-person and virtually through Zoom:
- Fridays 9:30 – 10:45am
- Class meets: Sept 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, Nov 17, Dec 1, 8, and 15 – No class Oct 27, Nov 3, 10, and 24

Do you ever wonder how life might be different if you felt less anxious?
Rabbi Caryn Aviv’s Unlearning Jewish Anxiety offers a powerful way to understand how anxiety is a thief that steals our joy. In this 5-week class, you’ll learn how to practice curiosity, deepen your self-compassion, and deploy simple tools to calm your breathing. You’ll learn to notice and name when you’re experiencing two common Jewish anxiety patterns. You’ll also learn how to meet difficult moments with curiosity, awareness, and new habits. Scholar in Residence, Professor Shaul Magid, will be in the Boulder community for three days for Meaning and Joy!
Shaul Magid is Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College, a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard, and the Kogod Senior Research Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America. In 2023-2024 he will be the Visiting Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Harvard Divinity School. He has been the rabbi of the Fire Island Synagogue in Seaview, Fire Island, NY for the past 25 years. He is the author of many books and essays. His new book “The Necessity of Exile: Essays from a Distance” (New York: Ayin Press) will be available November 2023.
The Boulder JCC is thrilled to be a host for one of these meaningful events during this special weekend!
Saturday, December 2: Spirit Music at the Boulder JCC
Come together and celebrate the spirit of joy with captivating music performances. Our storyteller, Rabbi Marc, will guide us along through this musical experience with Rabbi Marc Soloway and Rabbi Fred Greene as leads for the Havdallah. Join us at 6 pm for a social and refreshments.
Cantor Devorah Avery, Cantorial Soloist Emerita Holli Berman, and Friends: With their voices together, share glimpses of heartfelt music from the neo-Hasidic style to contemporary folk melodies. Music has always been the connecting bridge between these in our effort to cultivate a personal relationship with God through music.
Shaul Magid Discovering Banjo with a Jewish Sound: For thousands of years Jews lived in many locales and appropriated the music from the cultures around them. In many cases, they adopted the music from their surroundings into the liturgy used in synagogues. Drawing from music of the mountain regions from Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina, Shaul Magid developed a new approach to the Kabbalat Shabbat prayers using old-time Appalachian music on the banjo.
Jubilee Klezmer: Witness a joyful and diverse group of Boulder area musicians who explore classics and hidden gems of klezmer music and Yiddish song. They are inspired by bands and artists such as The Klezmer Conservatory Band, Veretski Pass, Tsibele, Andy Statman, The Andrews Sisters, Ruth Rubin, and Leonard Cohen. We play, we celebrate, we contemplate, we listen, and we are alle freylekh—all joyful in a musical community.
This program is made possible by generous individuals in the Boulder community and presented by the Boulder JCC, Congregation Bonai Shalom, Congregation Har HaShem, Congregation Nevei Kodesh, University of Colorado Program in Jewish Studies.

Founded in New York City in 2007, the festival presents international and award-winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout each hosting city. We are bringing Hava Nagila (The Movie) BACK! For those who saw it the first time and for those who missed it, this will make your day and definitely make you smile!
Hava Nagila is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of the great Jewish standard. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Regina Spektor and more, the film follows the ubiquitous party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the kibbutzim of Palestine to the cul-de-sacs of America. High on fun and entertainment, Hava Nagila (The Movie) is also surprisingly profound, tapping into universal themes about the importance of joy, the power of music and the resilient spirit of a people.
75 minute film plus schmooze following. No cost.

We enter places, form relationships and pursue projects often with little understanding of how they come about, their meaning and the relevance of seeing beyond what manifests. You’re invited to LIGHT THE NIGHT – Temple Sinai’s congregational and communal event. Stand with courage and pride for our Jewish heritage, and make the brilliance of our community shine into the hearts and minds of Jews and non-Jews alike. We do this on the festival holiday of Chanukah, a symbol of dedication. We will dedicate ourselves to, and ask all of you to dedicate yourselves to, “stand in solidarity against hate”.
There will be a short program in our sanctuary featuring government leaders, community leaders and the singing of Chanukah songs led by our very own Temple Sinai Preschool!
Following the short program, we will gather outside to actually LIGHT THE NIGHT as we dedicate our new outdoor space and enjoy live music, dancing, latkes, donuts and hot beverages.
Food trucks will be available to purchase dinner.

A key to consciousness in Kabbalah is the Tree of Life, a visual map of how infinite and finite flow into and from each other. We enter places, form relationships and pursue projects often with little understanding of how they come about, their meaning and the relevance of seeing beyond what manifests. In this introduction to the Tree of Life we learn about and then practice incorporating this system of energy flow in all our interactions.
Free intro classes are approximately 1 hour long

Shine the Light of Chanukah on Pearl Street with the County’s Largest Menorah
Hosted by the Boulder County Center for Judaism and the Boulder JCC
BOULDER, CO: December is one of the darkest times of the year, and this year the world is a dark place. But every year, Chanukah comes around to help us create and spread light.
For over 20 years, the Boulder Jewish community has gathered on Pearl Street Mall for the annual Menorah lighting featuring the biggest Hanukkah menorah in the county. As a popular Chanukah event, hundreds join yearly in the public display of adding in light and Jewish pride.
Once again, the Boulder Fire Department is bringing a ladder truck to create the Chanukah gelt drop. Stand under the rain of Chanukah and collect the torrent of gelt and good luck.
NEW! Be the first to see the Art Menorah, made entirely of tiles decorated with pain markers by kids of all ages at the 2023 Boulder Jewish Festival this summer.
Of course, there will be hot latkes made right on site and fresh sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).
When: Monday, December 11 at 5:30pm
Where: 1300 block of the Pearl Street Mall, behind the courthouse.
No registration is required, but, if you do register, the first 100 people will receive a special Chanukah gift at the event. Register
at BoulderJCC.org OR Boulder Judaism.com. Please do not register at both.
This exciting annual event is hosted by the Boulder County Center for Judaism and the Boulder JCC, and generously sponsored by Andy and Audry Franklin, the Boulder Jewish News, Caroline Bleicher of Re/MAX of Boulder, Downtown Boulder, the Oreg Foundation, Rhonda and Bruce Wildman, and Jackie and Mark Sprinces Wong for whose support we are enormously grateful.

Shabbat aLIVE is our Friday evening gathering to exhale, relax, and connect. We invite you to participate in this deeply spiritual, musical experience led by our rabbinic team and community members! This program is offered both in-person and livestreamed.
Shabbat aLIVE is an open tent for all – a celebration of maximum inclusion and invitation, featuring song and silence, prayer and reflection, blessing and belonging.
This is certainly a family friendly event. Everyone is welcome, but children need to be supervised by their parents or caregivers.

Join us for YAD Shabbat: Find the Light, the best Shabbat of the year, during a time when we need connection and joy the most. Mingle with friends old and new, enjoy dinner, then grab a hot chocolate (Schnapps and Baileys included if that’s your thing) and explore the holiday lights throughout Denver Botanic Gardens.
Ticket includes dinner, open bar, and entry to the Denver Botanic Gardens light exhibit, Blossoms of Light.
What do I wear?: It’s going to be cold, and we want everyone to be layered and comfortable for roaming the gardens, so this is not a formal event. That said, if you want to wear a Hanukkah sweater or glitz and glam it up a bit, go for it! Casual is okay too.
Like all JEWISHcolorado events, safety and security are top priorities. If you have specific concerns, please reach out to events@JEWISHcolorado.org.
Your support makes programs like this, and our ability to mobilize during times of crisis, possible. Please consider making a donation to JEWISHcolorado’s annual campaign.

For students that are thinking about college, there are a new set of factors influencing college decisions – from rising antisemitism and a polarized environment around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to new state laws restricting reproductive rights and trans health care. Join Moving Traditions for a discussion that will cover:
- How you and your teen can gather the best information to make the right choice
- How to preserve your relationship with your teen to help them feel supported and manage stress throughout the college search and application process
- How to embolden your teen and give them tools so they go off to college feeling prepared and confident
Moving Tradition’s VP of Education Rabbi Daniel Brenner will sit down with Deborah Heller, director of College Counseling at the Beacon School in New York and the founder of Impact College Consulting, and Maiya Edelson, Vice President of Organizational Learning and Development at Hillel International. We will take a look at what’s happening at college campuses nationwide with insights from Hillel International, and hear from Moving Traditions teen participants who will give us a ground-level view of the current climate.
In this Raising Up Teens webinar for parents and educators of Jewish teens, you will receive actionable takeaways and resources to help you and the teen in your life.

These monthly parenting talks are designed to strengthen and foster the relationship between parents and children. Each workshop will bring in professionals to present on various topics that pertain to parents of infants and beyond. Parents will learn new skills, be part of an active discussion, and gather helpful tools for everyday parenting.
Session Topic: How to Help Your Kids Manage Their Big Feelings
If explosions and meltdowns take place in your home, you may send your children to their room, demand they stop or even scream back at them. You may hand them a screen and hope that’ll take care of it. The thing is IF you keep handling their big emotions like this, in no time, you’ll have an unruly, lonely and disconnected tween on your hands. They won’t work well with others or be capable of building healthy, strong relationships. They’ll struggle with school, making friends and maybe even addiction (tech?). You’ll be at a loss for what went wrong.
Instead, learn how to handle your child’s big emotions so that they feel seen and heard, so that you feel more clear and calm and so that your connection deepens during these foundational years, versus frays.

We enter places, form relationships and pursue projects often with little understanding of how they come about, their meaning and the relevance of seeing beyond what manifests. Are you curious how understanding your brain can better impact the quality of your life? If so, join us for this a 3-week session of interactive learning that will offer insights and access to the wisdom found in Whole Brain Living, The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor.
In Whole Brain Living, The Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Life, Dr. Bolte Taylor chronicles the experience of her rare stroke at the age of 37 where she lost her ability to walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her past. It took eight years for her to rebuild her brain — to recover all physical, emotional, and thinking abilities. She blends neuroanatomy with psychology to illustrate how we can short-circuit emotional reactivity to lead more fulfilling and peaceful lives and create healthier relationships. She introduces readers to the four characters of the brain that make up who we are and presents a new framework to understand our behaviors, feelings, and emotions.
Participants are requested to read Whole Brain Living: The Anatomy of Choice and The Four Characters That Drive Our Life before the first session.
Dr. Bolte Taylor is an author, speaker, and Harvard-trained neuroanatomist. With views of over 27 million on her 2013 Ted Talk and her first book, My Stroke of Insight, A Brain Scientists Journey, being a best seller, Dr. Bolte Taylor is making strides in the public world. Excitingly, Dr. Bolte Taylor is scheduled to make a virtual appearance during one of our sessions.
The sessions will be facilitated by Rob Schware, Patricia Karpas and Lori Dube. Rob is certified in applying Whole Brain Living and is the co-founder and co-executive director of the Give Back Yoga Foundation. Patricia is a longtime media executive and host of the popular podcast Untangle, where she interviews experts, thought leaders, and authors on topics like neuroscience, brain health, general health and wellness, mindfulness, relationships, and more. She is also the co-founder of 5-star app, Meditation Studio. Lori Dube is a social worker, life coach and Jewish Mindfulness and Meditation facilitator. She has also facilitated meditation sits and groups on Wise Aging and Dating Later in Life.
