A child of Holocaust survivors, Lilly Marks’ parents couldn’t help with her homework – but they gave her indelible lessons on surviving adversity and shouldering responsibility. From practicing balancing her parents’ checkbook in 5th grade, she would go on to become a member of the Federal Reserve Bank Board of Directors, an author of a key section of the Affordable Care Act, Vice President for Health Affairs at the University of Colorado, and a key player in building today’s thriving Anschutz Medical Campus. Join us for a rare personal conversation about her extraordinary life. This is part of the Center for Bioethics and Humanities conversation series with Jewish women in medicine, presented by the Helen Morris American Jewish Experience in Medicine Program. This is a hybrid event with both an in-person and Zoom option.

agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land, showcases new work created by 18 local and national artists in collaboration with Boulder County Farmers in an effort to draw out parallels between art and agriculture. The intention behind commissioning artists to collaborate with farmers is to shed light on some of the diverse practices employed by farmers along Colorado’s Front Range, which inherently address issues from land rights to food access, to cultural heritage and climate change, among many others. Presented by BMoCA and the Longmont Museum, this multi-venue exhibition includes artwork on view at the two museums and site-specific installations at three local farms: Ollin Farms in Longmont, the Boulder JCC Milk & Honey Farm, and the Agricultural Heritage Center in Longmont.
Join us for the site-specific installment of the Gravity Fed exhibition at the Milk & Honey Farm. A series of small mobile stages were built to carry these sculptures and will be moved in a procession from the waters of the creek to Milk & Honey Farm at the Boulder JCC, unfolding a series of performative activations of the made sculptures. The wheelbarrows will remain at Milk and Honey Farm during the 2023 summer for community viewing.
“We think of two words Gravity and Fed. Gravity gives weight to physical objects. We cannot see gravity, only the things moved by gravity. Gravity has no color, no sound and no meaning except when two or more matter(s)come together and connect.”
Artist Sam Van Aken has worked in collaboration with Colorado University’s Boulder Apple Tree Project to plant and graft four apple trees at exhibition sites. Van Aken traveled to Colorado and planted four trees, a Dolgo Crabapple base, and used scions collected throughout the Front Range community to graft between 20-30 heritage apple varieties to each tree. Sam will be coming back to the Boulder JCC to continue the grafting process at the Milk & Honey Farm.
In an effort to reduce single-use items, we encourage you to bring your own water bottles, utensils, and other serving pieces to all programs at the Boulder JCC. We are grateful for the partnership of our community in our commitment to sustainability.

We invite you to the Messinger Gallery opening for guest artist, Erin Donnelly. Expose yourself to amazing art and engage in meaningful discussion.
Erin Donnelly’s paintings are delicate re-imaginations of landscapes and the events of strangers. Though voyeuristic, they read as deeply personal reinterpretations in that they also seem to question the impact of the observer on the observed landscape. Donnelly studied drawing and painting while receiving a degree in social and cultural anthropology from UC Berkeley. Her degree work focused on mythological and religious traditions in contemporary cultures, and her painting practice continues this line of investigation. Erin has worked as an archaeologist, interior designer, landscape designer, headhunter, and head of sales for a successful beverage company startup before officially retiring from the corporate world in 2021 to focus on painting full time.

Event Details
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while remote from everyday life in America, is often a subject of intense focus on college campuses, leaving many concerned about the discourse and conflict they will encounter at college.David Makovsky and Ghaith Al-Omari have made, separately or together, close to 200 campus visits around the country in the past few years to talk about Israel and the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, modeling respectful, thoughtful, and informed discourse that focuses on durable, realistic solutions. Longtime colleagues at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a Middle East-focused DC think tank, both have been intimately involved in the Israeli-Palestinian affairs for decades. They have served as inside practitioners and external analysts in different rounds of peace negotiations.
We invite concerned grandparents and parents of high school and college students to join us for this insightful discussion. David and Ghaith will present their insights from hundreds of on-campus encounters on the state of the discourse at colleges, their work, and how to engage in productive and reasonable conversations about a challenging, intricate topic.
