6 Unbelievable Facts About Liev Schreiber

Jan 18, 2023

Can you be-LIEV-e it? Liev Schrieber is joining us at our upcoming Signature fundraising event at Ball Arena in Denver on February 22.

An American actor, producer and director, Schreiber is most famous for his roles in films such as Scream 2, The Sum of All Fears, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and has also received acclaim for his role as the titular character on Showtime’s Ray Donovan. Schreiber has been involved in the entertainment industry since the mid-90’s, and his latest forthcoming work, a limited series about Miep Gies, an employee of Otto Frank who helped hide him and his family — including Anne Frank — from the Nazis during World War II, drops later this year.

We know his name, his face, and his incredible works on stage and screen, but what don’t we know about Liev Schreiber? Read on to discover six fast and fun facts about Liev Schreiber.

Liev Schreiber

Schreiber Is an Ivy League Graduate

That’s right! Schreiber holds an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama. He also delivered a lecture at the university’s Elizabethan Club’s 20th annual Maynard Mack. In a world where celebrities seemingly stumble upon their stardom via talent agent discoveries, Schreiber is a true master of his craft, with the credentials to back up the claim. He was even heralded as “the finest American theater actor of his generation” by The New York Times.

He’s Won a Tony Award

Along with his top-notch education and training in theatre arts, Schreiber has also won a Tony Award for his work on the stage play Glengarry Glen Ross in 2005, claiming “Best Featured Actor in a Play.” He also won his nomination for “Outstanding Actor in a Play” at the Drama Desk Awards for his work in A View from the Bridge.

Owns a Boutique Advertising Agency with Scott Carlson

If you’re a New Yorker, you might have heard of Van’s General Store. Yes, you read that right; that’s Schreiber’s advertising agency that he founded alongside industry veteran Scott Carlson. “Scott always wanted to be an artist, and I always wanted to be in advertising,” Liev told the New York Times in April 2014.

He Was Considered for a Role in “The Dark Knight”

We almost saw a whole different side of the character Harvey Dent/Two Face (see what we did there?), who was ultimately portrayed by actor Aaron Eckhart.

Before Fame, Schreiber Was a Bike Messenger in NYC

It’s hard to picture a character as intimidating as Sabretooth from X-Men riding around New York City making deliveries, but believe it or not, Schreiber was on the job before making it to Broadway or the silver screen.

Jewish, Polish and Ukrainian Roots

Schreiber is Jewish and of Polish and Ukrainian descent! He was born in San Francisco to a Protestant father and Jewish mother, and his maternal grandfather emigrated from Ukraine. His mother, who is an aficionada of classical music and Russian literature, has said that she named Liev after her favorite Russian author, Leo Tolstoy, while his father has stated that Schreiber was named after the doctor who saved his mother’s life. His family nickname, adopted when Schreiber was a baby, is “Huggy.”
