JCRC Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), a program of JEWISHcolorado, stands with our entire Colorado community to honor the courageous Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his tireless fight for justice and equality for all.

As Coretta Scott King so eloquently put it, Martin Luther King Day is “a day of interracial and intercultural cooperation and sharing.” As rhetoric around the country has become increasingly divisive and hostile to many minority groups, the JCRC is committed to upholding key Jewish values of Tikkun Olam—repairing the world – and Derech Eretz—civility and the consideration of others. Our tradition teaches us to show respect for ALL of our fellow human beings regardless of their age, race, culture, nationality, immigration status, income, gender, religion, sexuality, or political views. The quest begun by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – to reach social justice for all – continues today.

JCRC works to promote a strong, vibrant community and we are proud to join with our community to project a unified voice in support of the values that unite us all. We accept the call to service Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. asked of us fifty years ago: to demand equality for all and speak out against actions that impact vulnerable populations or compromise our civil liberties.
