On December 26, a magnitude 9.0 quake ruptured the Indian Ocean seabed off Indonesia's Sumatra island, sending huge tidal waves thousands of miles to countries around southern and southeast Asia and even in Africa. The tsunamis' paths left vast, indiscriminate destruction in coastal communities that included both tourist sites and impoverished villages.

These tsunamis have caused mass devastation and enormous loss of life. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is mobilizing to raise funds to help various agencies on the ground provide emergency supplies for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been left homeless due to flooding and structural damage. Now you can donate to the JDC emergency fund through the Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado.

BREAKING NEWS ON TAX ADVANTAGE:

***The House and Senate each passed a bill (H.R. 241) to allow taxpayers to treat charitable cash contributions made in January, 2005 for the relief of victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami as made on December 31, 2004. Thus, contributions made before the end of this month for tsunami aid will count against your 2004 taxes.***
